Microbes play a critical role in the health of all animals, including humans, but how do we know when microbes are promoting health or promoting disease? In this talk, Dr. Jamie Foster discusses the language of microbes and how microbes communicate with their animal partners. She discusses how spaceflight can serve as an important tool for us to understand how microbes communicate and how they can help animals cope with extreme stress. Dr. Jamie Foster is Professor in the Microbiology and Cell Science department at the University of Florida. She works in the fields of astrobiology and space biology and has focused on how spaceflight impacts beneficial interactions between animals and microbes. Dr. Foster received her B.S. in Zoology from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst and her M.S. degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California. She completed her Ph.D. in Zoology at the University of Hawai’i and then conducted Postdoctoral Fellowships in Microbiology at the National Institutes of Health and NASA Ames Research Center. Dr. Foster has conducted several spaceflight experiments aboard the space shuttle and International Space Station. She has also served on the Florida Space Grant Consortium Board of Directors, President of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research and on the NASA Biological and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at [ Ссылка ]
