This is part three in my series of videos covering putting your dog to sleep.
November 18th, 2001, was the worst day of my life - it was the day I took my constant companion and best friend to the vets to be euthanised. He was a good age for a Labrador, 13 years and 5 months and was happy and very healthy up to the last year or so. First he contracted arthritis and got progressively over time. It got to the stage where I was talking about having him put down, but then they came up with wonder drug, a monthly injection which cured the symptoms completely within a few days. At that time we also discovered he had cancer of the jaw, something that continued to grow to the size of half a bar of soap, but never seemed to bother him. Then one night he had an epileptic fit which scared the hell out of me. And I was so scared over the following weeks that he would have another, which would mean putting him down. So basically, for 14 months before his death I knew the end was coming, but I didn't know when. In the end it was the nerves to his back legs that failed him. It was a gradual process, but the last few days he went into steep decline. That's when I knew it was time. Although it is without doubt the worst thing in the world to do, Sid's welfare and just plain dignity had to come first. But it is a terrible judgment to call. My advice? Your dog comes first, if you love them you won't let them suffer. If in doubt, put them down - that way you know they will not suffer, or pick up on you being upset. They are so sensitive to your feelings.
