LAM MORRISON - The Guitar King of Thailand
Biography :
Lam started playing guitar when he was 13 years old after teaching himself on an acoustic guitar. Later he formed a band called The VIP group and toured around the air bases playing for the US forces during the Vietnam War in the late 60's.
After the war, because the band was very rock oriented with a very unique sound called "underground music" The VIP group found it very hard to get well attended gigs in Thailand as Thai people hadn't really cottoned onto Rock and Roll. Luckily at one gig in Bangkok a German tourist was in the audience persuaded Lam to go to Germany with him, He went and played all over Germany. Whilst in Germany he won a guitar duelling competition and earned himself the "guitar king" title. He then toured in countries like Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France and then over to North America.
On his return to Thailand he was signed by EMI music Thailand and released his first album, "Night in Bangkok" which sold 1 million copies, the first ever rock album in Thailand to reach sales of this size.
After the release he was sponsored by EMI music and went back to Europe and toured with famous bands like Deep Purple and UFO, during this time befriended musical greats like Ritchie Blackmore.
On his return to Thailand a lot of new musicians had emerged and musical styles had changed and Lam settled down doing various gigs, appearances and concerts including may with the superstar band "Carabao".
Lam is a master of lead and bass guitars, piano and the harmonica as well as having a great singing voice. He was influenced by musicians and bands including Jimmi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, Rory Gallagher, Chuck Berry, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck to name just a few. Lam also enjoys playing classical greats like Beethoven no 5 and 6 on his guitar.
