1. Kaluga Oblast is a federal subject of Russia.

2. In the 14th century, Kaluga lands were the place for constant confrontations between Lithuania and Moscow. Traditionally, it is considered that Kaluga was established as a frontier settlement to protect the Moscow principality from Lithuania's attacks. In 1480–1481, Kaluga's territory was the place of the great stand on the Ugra river, resulting in the liberation of Russian lands from the Tatar yoke and Moscow's transformation into a sovereign state.

3. Kaluga is a city and the administrative center of Kaluga Oblast, Russia.

4. Kaluga Oblast is a centre of the Slavic native faith (Rodnovery) movement, being the headquarters of the Union of Slavic Native Faith (Rodnover) Communities (Союз Славянских Общин Славянской Родной Веры) located in Kaluga city. The region has many temples dedicated to the Slavic gods.

5. Obninsk is a city in Kaluga Oblast. The history of Obninsk began in 1945 when the First Research Institute Laboratory "V", which later became known as IPPE was founded. On June 27, 1954, Obninsk started operations of the world's first nuclear power plant to generate electricity for a power grid.

6. Maloyaroslavets is a town. During the French invasion of Russia, the Battle of Maloyaroslavets took place near this town on October 12 (24) of 1812.

7. The Optina Pustyn is an Eastern Orthodox monastery for men near Kozelsk in Russia. In the 19th century, the Optina was the most important spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church and served as the model for several other monasteries.
