That many of the show’s gruesome fictional scenes are based on fact? Few would have regarded The Handmaid’s Tale as rooted in reality when it first hit television screens. The show is based in a fictional future where the United States government is overthrown by a theocratic regime. However, according to the author of the original book on which the show is based, Margaret Atwood, the events depicted in the show are all based on reality. In fact, Atwood has revealed that she imposed only one rule on herself while writing the story, and that was to only describe events that have really happened. The author said, “I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which technology did not already exist.” Atwood herself was heavily involved in the most recent adaptation of her work for the screen, even making a cameo appearance in Season One of The Handmaid’s Tale.
