Anti-corruption candidate Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala's progressive Movimiento Semilla party won the presidential election, securing 58.01% of the vote against former first lady Sandra Torres' 37.24%. Arévalo's victory marked a significant shift in a race tainted by disqualifications of opposition candidates who criticized corruption. Arévalo, pledging to tackle crime, corruption, malnutrition, and inequality, tapped into public discontent. However, challenges loom as Congress is poised to be largely controlled by establishment parties. Despite allegations of irregularities and disqualification attempts against Arévalo, observers witnessed the election with no reported irregularities. His win reflects rising concerns about kleptocracy, graft, and weakened rule of law in Guatemala, factors contributing to inequality and migration to the United States.
