"The final death toll (in Khost) is 36, and 1,349 others were injured. Our mobile teams are still at the site, and they are dealing with more trauma patients in the aftermath of the earthquake."

"We have a lot of shortcomings and we need help. We are very grateful for the support from the international community, but now we need a different kind of assistance. As everyone saw in the media, all of our houses are destroyed. We need help to rebuild our houses."

LEADIN:
An impoverished Afghan region in the country's east has been devastated by the powerful earthquake that killed at least 1,000 people on June 22.
STORYLINE:
When a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan last month, Gul Daraz Khan started searching for his child.
The devastating quake hit a rugged, mountainous region of the country's east on June 22, flattening stone and mud-brick homes and killing at least 1,000 people and injuring around 1,500 others.
Khan found his son under a collapsed roof in their house in Spera district.
The child was stuck there for 12 hours.
The 6.1-magnitude quake killed Khan's mother.
His wife and four daughters were injured.
It was Afghanistan's deadliest disaster in two decades.
It happened as Taliban rulers and relief agencies were already struggling with the country's multiple humanitarian crises.
The quake brought more misery to Afghanistan, where millions face increasing hunger and poverty and the health system has been crumbling since the Taliban retook power nearly 10 months ago.
Mobile clinics are still set up in Khost province to treat people injured in the earthquake.
The director of the health department there, Dr. Abdul Karim Mandozai, says the clinics are receiving people dealing with trauma.
Spera resident Noor Khan lost his mother in the disaster.
He prays at her grave every day.
Khan called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to help rebuild homes that were destroyed in the earthquake.
The magnitude 6 temblor struck the mountainous villages in the Paktika and Khost provinces near the country's border with Pakistan, flattening homes and triggering landslides.
Overstretched aid agencies say the earthquake underscored the need for the international community to rethink its financial cut-off of Afghanistan and freezing of the country's reserves.
