Hi, this is Dr. Drew. Teenagers and parents of teenagers will often ask, "should I have my wisdom teeth out?", "when should I have my wisdom teeth out?" or "should I wait and see if there is room in my mouth for the wisdom teeth to come in and be able to be maintained?" This is a difficult question to answer in general, but my experience has been that most wisdom teeth cause more problems than they do good when they are left in the mouth. This is especially the case if there is some form of impaction of the wisdom teeth or if they are having a problem coming in, or if it is trapped by another tooth. This can often cause damage to the other tooth. Other times the wisdom teeth will just partially come in. One of two of the tips of the teeth will come through the gums and then it will stop growing in. This causes a lot of infection because the bacteria that is in all of our mouths can get down around that tooth and it is very difficult to clean that area. This can result in significant infection. Even when wisdom teeth do come all the way in, they are so far back in the mouth that we often find that the patient is having a hard time cleaning them anyway, so down the road they are having fillings or even having to have them taken out later in life because they have become so decayed or they have abscessed or they are not repairable. I am of the opinion that it is usually a good idea to have wisdom teeth removed at a young age. Every dentist has their preference about that. We usually suggest that sometime around fourteen or fifteen years depending on the patient. Usually the mid to late teens and even into the early twenties is a good time to have the wisdom teeth removed in my opinion. When we have to take wisdom teeth out who is in their forties, fifties or sixties, that person is just not going to heal as well. This is why I always encourage people to consider wisdom teeth removal when they are younger. If you want to know if you need your wisdom teeth removed, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will take an x-ray of that area and evaluate your wisdom teeth and give you some guidance there. If you would like more information about wisdom tooth removal visit [ Ссылка ].
