Layla (Unplugged) by Eric Clapton
.
Eric Clapton is one of my all-time favourite guitar heroes. He’s a master of understated, bluesy rubato phrasing but can also tear up the fretboard . When I was a teenager this hit album came out and reinvigorated everyones love for acoustic guitar blues. I couldn’t wait to get the transcription book and start learning all the incredible songs and this song in particular had not one but TWO killer lead breaks on it.
.
The challenges to playing this solo were in copying his signature grace-note legato ornamentations and his very unique vibrato on a few notes. He seems to lose his grip on the neck and shake his whole arm from the elbow to get that effect and it took a long time to figure that out! My fingers also took a beating due to the heavy gauge strings on the acoustic but it did help to get a fuller body to the notes. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did working on it/filming it!
