The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor and is a gift from the people of France to the United States. The monument was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi and was dedicated on Oct 28th 1886. The statue represents a robed female figure which represents Libertas - the Roman goddess of freedom who carries a torch and a tablet upon which is engraved the July 4, 1776 -- date of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue is a both a symbol of freedom and of the values of the USA. Immigrants arriving to New York by ship were uplifted when seeing the Statue of Liberty. Today the monument attracts over 4 million annual visitors, and is a accessible via the ferry from Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan. The ferry also visits Ellis Island, another iconic feature in the history of immigration to the USA.
