This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Marcus Tullius Cicero's work On The Ends, specifically on his discussion in book 3 about what he calls the "primary impulses" or principles of human nature, present from infancy onward. These involve self-perception and affection, a desire to continue life and for the integrity of one's body. These plan an important role in Stoic ethics, as Cato presents it.
