A man rammed a car into a security barrier just outside the US Capitol building before jumping out with a knife.
One officer was killed and the attacker, identified as 25-year-old Noah Greene, was shot dead.
While not thought to be "terrorism-related", the incident has shaken Washington, which is still on edge since the Capitol riots.
