The word "Byzantine" comes from Byzantium, an old Greek colony that was founded by a man named Byzas. Byzantium's position on the European side of the Bosporus (the strait between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean) made it a great place to serve as a transit and trading center between Europe and Asia.

In the year 330 A.D., the Roman Emperor Constantine I built "New Rome" on the site of the old Greek town of Byzantium. This was the start of what would become the Byzantine Empire.

The Byzantine Empire was a very large and powerful society. In the year 476 A.D., the western half of the Roman Empire broke apart and fell. Still, the eastern half lasted for another thousand years, giving rise to a rich history of art, literature, and scholarship while working as a military buffer between Europe and Asia.

In 1453, the last year of the Byzantine Empire, an Ottoman army took Constantinople by storm. This was during the rule of Constantine XI. But the people had a lot of strange habits that would probably surprise you.
