Israeli journalist and filmmaker Yuval Abraham says he has received death threats, after an Israeli news channel covered his acceptance speech at the 74th Berlin Film Festival on Saturday and described it as “antisemitic”. In the speech, Abraham described the lives he and Palestinian co-director Basel Adra would return to as “apartheid” and “inequality”.
Abraham and Adra accepted the award for Best Documentary for their documentary No Other Land, which documents the Israeli occupation of Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank.
Berlin’s mayor Kai Wegner also attacked the speech, describing it as “intolerable relativisation” and said that “antisemitism has no place in Berlin”. Wegner demanded that that the management of the film festival would ensure that “no such incidents should happen again” and added that “Berlin is firmly on Israel’s side”.
