When it comes to clearing land for deer food plots, the GreatER Bar skid steer ripper and land leveler attachment is a valuable form of food plot equipment for the job – especially in clearcut logging areas filled with roots or saplings.
A standard skid loader bucket struggles to catch the stumps, roots and saplings and end up removing too much topsoil and created holes.
Soil conditioners will loosen the soil but tend to just spin on the roots without pulling them.
With up to 4 1/8 inches of ripper depth, the GreatER bar both loosens the soil and grabs roots – all while leveling the ground without grabbing excess top soil.
The trick is using the right amount of down pressure. With the retractable ripper teeth deployed, lower the boom of your skid steer until the GreatER Bar’s 3 cutting bars are just resting on the ground, but not pushing down on it initially. Drive forward, allowing the teeth to dig into the ground and grab roots as you go. Meanwhile the cutting bars will shave off high areas of the ground, leaving most of the topsoil in place.
This may take several passes, depending on the type and amount of trees and debris you’re dealing with.
Once the soil is loosened, and most of the roots and sticks are out of the way, the leveling bars can really go to work filling in the pockets left by the tree roots.
Either back up and let the ripper teeth retract on their own or mechanically deactivate the teeth with the blue bar on the front for leveling while going both forward and backward.
This is the point when you can add more down pressure. If you really want to till up that top 4 inches or so of topsoil, keep the teeth activated. This will allow you to continue ripping when you travel forward.
Once you have the land leveled, you’re ready for planting. Enjoy!
