Initial test of a 2 character open-source split-flap display. Enclosure and mechanisms are made from laser-cut MDF, flaps are standard CR80 PVC id cards with store-bought vinyl letter stickers, and driven by a 28BYJ-48 stepper motor.
Cost is roughly $50 per module (about half of that is laser cutting cost).

This initial test is running completely open-loop (no "home" position sensor installed yet), driven by an ATmega32U4 programmed via Arduino.
Since upgrading to 12V motors and improving the acceleration code, a full revolution of a character now takes just 2.72 seconds (~22RPM).
