The establishment of libraries has always been one of the most crucial parts of Muslim civilisations throughout history. With the spread of Islam, the need to gain knowledge and participate in productive debates became more essential. The House of Wisdom Baghdad was a place with the biggest collection of the rarest and most original books, where the authors and researchers gathered to work benefitting from the library resources. It became the foundation of the Golden age of Islam.
The house of wisdom played a key role in connecting the Islamic world fronts in the west and east. Moreover, it introduced the true heritage in its ideal form to be protected from any damage or loss. It was the very first scientific and educational library that gathered scientists, scholars and translators to study and research. It became an exemplary model for other leaders as well who tried to simulate and initiate new libraries and houses of wisdom to compete with the House of Wisdom of Baghdad. Few of the great libraries such as the Aghlabids House of Wisdom in Tunisia, the Andalusian House of Wisdom and the Cairo’s House of Wisdom came into existence as a consequence of their competition with the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.
After the invasion of the Mongols (656-1258 A.D) they wrecked the public and private closets of books, manuscripts, maps, and observatories. They burned the majority of the books whilst the others were thrown into the Tigris River. Almost all books were turned into dust by the Helagu Khan which marked the destruction of the House of Wisdom ultimately resulting in the downfall of the Abbasid caliphate.
