For those in power in the state of South Carolina, the November 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln was the final straw. Convinced that he and the Republican party were certain to forever change their economic, political, and cultural world, it was time to act.

And so, even before the election year was out, the Palmetto State initiated the process to do what today, few Americans - if any - would even begin to consider.

For this episode, the story of South Carolina’s momentous (and as consequences would demonstrate, calamitous) December decision: secession.
