Flat or deep?
Discs or tines?
There is a lot to consider when it comes to stubble cultivation.
And that's why Josef and Michael show you today how to make the right decision for the first pass.
👍. Looking at the soil surface: Ensuring that the straw is evenly distributed as well as well chopped. Furthermore, identification of tracks (harvesting vehicles, fertiliser spreaders, crop protection sprayers,...) and resulting compaction.
✌. Looking at the soil profile using the spade diagnosis: spots both between the tracks as well as in the deepest (combine) track need to be examined and assessed with regard to structure, root penetration, the amount of organic material and the depth of compaction - if present.
🤟. Objectives of stubble cultivation: redistribution of straw to increase the uniformity of distribution and to promote rotting, encourage germination of volunteers, terminate weeds and break up the soil for a better drying effect.
👉 Now a decision on the type of stubble cultivation and cultivation depth can be made based on these criteria.
🤓 Josef also explains why he prefers the tine cultivator to the disc cultivator at this field site this year, and what needs to be considered if you want to keep the area clear mechanically in the next step.
