A small portion of the sky of Paris opens the door to Paradise.
*
Inspired by the sky landscapes of the 18e arrondissement of Paris, on the everyday path to our studio, this film was made during summer 2003 and first screened during the exhibition « Prenez L’Air De Paris », edition 2003 (commissaire Philippe Blondez for Paris Capitale de la Creation).

In this video, figures at different scales of our Belle & Bête characters are superimposed to the picture.
*
Florence's Belle characters are easy to catch and accessible, they carry a light feel at the edge of inconsequence. Apparently nothing serious.
*
Olivier's Bête character is more obscure and not an easy catch. It's about a bold, dark, heavy, distant, maybe sad tycoon.
*
When reunited, the facile Belle seems deeper, and the closed Bête shows a sweeter side. Both, they each step up their life.
*
Belle & Bête is a long time running project for us, featuring the eponymous characters in different universes and different videos.
*
It echoes a pictural work we do for years, with the same characters.
*
For many years, we work each on our side with Belle (for Deygas) and Bête (for Kuntzel). It is a way to take a fresh breathe, far from the working duet we form since 1990. With Belle and Bête, both of us has her/his "secret garden".
*
Then, after many years, we felt that we could try an other encounter between our own creations, try something unusual for us. We felt that we, as well as these two distinctive characters, were strong enough to cross paths. The fair way to make it appeared to be more about juxtaposition of the 2 individualities, and not a melting. We started with this video.
*
Differently than in our others works "at four hands", the Belle & Bête projects are runned without any concertation. We don't plan what to do, in which order, for which result. No storyboard, no sketch. One starts, the other continue, choose to end or not. It is a dialogue with no words. We never comment on each other step of work because we are are conscient of the fragility of the creation in process.
We all of a sudden become shy again.
