The documentary “Finnên” covers the little-known Arabian poets of Antakya, the city of civilizations with its multilingual and multicultural pattern. Finnêns’ (poets’) vivid poems which reflect their witnessing of history from past to present and mirroring the daily life are included in the documentary together with historical anecdotes and photos. From the folk hero Cemil Hâyek to the Korean War; from the reaping work in Çukurova to cotton-picking and their livestock, the reflection of a number of subjects on the literature and specifically the poetry are presented in the documentary.
The documentary, which is totally in Arabic, brings forward the effort and necessity to preserve the mother tongue. The fact that the conditions needed for the survival of ‘marginalized’ languages, or the ‘minority’ languages are still not built on a solid basis poses a threat not only to the extinction of Arabic as a language /dialect, but to loss of the values belonging to several cultures as well. The reason for this is that Arabic, which is one of the 15 languages spoken in Turkey, is the language of several communities belonging to different beliefs and cultures with its diverse dialects and accents.
