(29 Jan 2015) Thousands of mourners attended the funeral in Jerusalem on Thursday for Captain Yochai Kalangel, one of two Israeli soldiers killed by Lebanese militants in a missile attack the previous day.
Captain Yochai Kalangel, 25, was killed along with a fellow soldier on Wednesday when a salvo of missiles was fired by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in the area where the frontiers of Israel, Lebanon and Syria meet.
The deadly clashes marked the most serious escalation since the 2006 war between the two sides.
The flare-up, which also left a UN peacekeeper dead, added to the regional chaos brought on by neighbouring Syria's civil war.
Hezbollah indicated the attack was in retaliation for a deadly Israeli strike on its fighters inside Syria earlier this month.
Meanwhile in southern Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he held Iran responsible for the attack.
Netanyahu was speaking in Havat Shikmim in southern Israel, where he was attending a memorial ceremony for former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
He reiterated his opposition to Iran being allowed any nuclear capability, and said Israel would "continue to defend ourselves against all threats, near and far alike."
