This one is for ALL my special rare #TanjavurMarathi fam 💕
Context: Our community is Mahrashtrians who settled in Tanjavur (TN) many generations ago, and now have spread all over India. We speak a dialect of Marathi that has a Tamil slang accent to it with borrwed words from Tamil & other South Indian languages. My cousin and I definitely felt the identity crisis as kids
1) being Indian in America and 2) being Tanjavur Marathi not fittng in with other Indian cultures the same. We feel our culture is Unique as we really have a mix of all parts of India in us, and now as youth are def proud of who we are and this is our #sanskriti (heritage & culture) and wanted to post some fun content that may relate to many others in our community & to keep our language & culture alive, as with how rare our language is, it’s easy to to forget it as immerse in the cultures of our home state’s in India!
We call each other cousins but the irony is we actually don’t know how we are related, we are distant cousins with many relatives in between and this situation seems to happen to many people in our community as we meet each other-and I’m sure with many Indians as well!
Translation: I ask her if she knows how we are related, she says no, I say your Grandfathers’s dad’s-brothers -wifes-sisters-daughters-husbands-motherinlaws-brothers-son , his name is “a long South Indian name with ‘Rao’ at the end symbolizing the Marathj side of us”. I say : that “Uncle” is my Grandfathers relative.
Hope you enjoy💕🤣
