Prof. Thomas Binder, MD shares some valuable tips and tricks on how you can improve your imaging. For example. using the correct depth is very important when obtaining good cardiac views. This video demonstrates the echocardiography views when the depth is set too high. When the depth is set too high, many of the surrounding structures do not show good cardiac views. It's important that the entire ventricle is in the field of view in order to obtain good cardiac views. Prof. Thomas Binder, MD will also show you how to enter the probe into the ventricle that you want to see. The transducer orientation can be manipulated so that you can view both the left and right ventricle. Rotation is equally as important as orientation. If you over or under rotate, the ventricle will be open. This can be corrected to obtain good cardiac views by rotating the transducer either clockwise or counter clockwise. Positioning the patient is also very important for obtaining good cardiac views. We can also see what happens when the transducer is placed too far caudal. You will get a ventricle that is oval in shape. Typically, cardiac views will be better if you move up 1 intercostal space. Lastly, transducer tilt is critical in obtaining good cardiac views. When you tilt the transducer, you will have a short axis view more towards the base of the heart and you will see the aortic valve. This is a more standard view in echocardiography.
