AH-64 Apache of the Army Air Corps visits RAF Holbeach Air Weapons Range (AWR) fires live Hydra Rockets and fires 30mm rounds.
Holbeach AWR is a place to bring your aircraft to blow up and shoot stuff. When the pilot requests 'HOT', this means LIVE ROUNDS to be fired, and this means adrenalin for us on the ground. This was the first time we had ever seen rockets been fired on the range.
The Army Air Corps (AAC) is the combat aviation arm of the British Army. Recognisable by their distinctive blue berets, AAC soldiers deliver firepower from battlefield helicopters and fixed wing aircraft to overwhelm and defeat enemy forces.
Army Air Corps soldiers have been wearing the blue beret with pride since 1957. They use Army aircraft, such as the Apache attack helicopter, to deliver hard-hitting and effective support to ground forces during the key stages of battle.
The AAC’s role also includes reconnaissance. From high above the action, they observe enemy forces and pass information to troops on the ground. This fearsome combination of manoeuvrability and firepower makes the AAC one of the most potent of the Army’s combat arms.
The Army's aircraft enable our soldiers to carry out vital roles including reconnaissance missions and casualty evacuations, as well as troop transport and high-tech, anti-tank combat. The Apache attack helicopter is probably the most sophisticated piece of equipment in the world available to front-line troops. Our video shows just how awesome it is.
The AH-64 Apache has been designed to find and destroy air defence units, tanks and armoured vehicles. The Apache attack helicopter has utility beyond its primary role, capable of a wide range of battlefield tasks that include Intelligence, Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Escort/Force Protection and Command and Control (C2). The Apache can operate in all weathers, day or night and has significantly enhanced the Army's Air Manoeuvre capability.
Using the distinctive Longbow radar located above the main rotor blades, the Apache can detect and classify up to 256 potential targets, display 128 of these to the crew and prioritise the top 16 threats, all in a matter of seconds. It carries a mix of weapons that include a 30mm chain gun, 70mm rockets and Hellfire missiles to provide choice for the commander and flexibility during the mission.
In addition to the Longbow radar, the aircraft is equipped with optical and thermal imaging sights that are used to visually identify potential targets and pilot the aircraft at night and in low visibility conditions. Range and endurance can be increased using wing-mounted fuel tanks to provide a more persistent presence across a wider area. To increase its survivability, the Apache is fitted with a state of the art, fully integrated Defensive Aid Suite to protect the aircraft and crew.

*SAFETY
Please follow the guidelines and safety warnings when visiting ANY range. This is a place to blow up and shoot stuff, which means not following the LAW and SAFETY warnings that are all over the range can kill you. Please enjoy this safely. When the red flags and/or warning lights are on, this means that the range is active. Please DO NOT go onto the range. We are recording off the range and never go on it. Should you visit the range and the flags are not flying, this means that the range is NOT active. However, please still take care. Debris, metal or lead stuff or anything that looks like armament, bombs, bullets, rockets or missiles are not to be touched AT ALL! Please leave it alone as this can still be life threatening.
