In 1945, Harold and Ruth Handler decided to enter into a woodworking business with longtime friend Harold Matson. After some collaboration, they decided to name their business Mattel, a combination of Harold and Elliot. The business was lucrative producing picture frames and dabbled in making dollhouse furniture on the side. It was not long before the side business was doing better than the original company. Soon after it began, Matson sold his share of the business allowing the company to redirect into the market of toys. Roughly ten years later, Ruth came up with the concept for a doll that would forever change the success of the business, Barbie. This vlog discusses the origins of Barbie and where she successfully took Mattel.
