Zac James describes Marlu Man as a vigilante who kidnaps racist online trolls and punishes them from his mum’s garden shed. It's a cool plot for his dark comedy short film, but there’s a deeper meaning for the Yamatji playwright. The character was born from the injustice and racism Zac and his family experienced following the untimely and traumatic death of his nephew Elijah Doughty. In processing the death, Zac began writing Marlu Man. And with his family’s blessing, and the support from his First Nation’s and filmmaking community, he’s bought Marlu Man to life in a short film. In this week’s Paint It Blak episode, Emma sits down with Zac to talk about his debut film, how important it was to employ an Elder on set to facilitate a Welcome to Country, and daily yarning circles. He also reveals we’ll soon see more of Marlu Man, as Zac has been busy writing a feature film version of the kangaroo skin wearing anti-hero.
Marlu Man stars Clarence Ryan and Della-Rae Morrison and was produced by Brooke Collard.
