The alternative rock band Blind Melon was formed in Los Angeles in 1989, released their first album in 1992, saw it sell four million copies in 1993, and saw their career effectively come to a halt in 1995, when lead singer Shannon Hoon died of a drug overdose while the band was on tour. Blind Melon: Letters From a Porcupine is a feature-length documentary that offers an in-depth look at the group's meteoric rise to fame and Hoon's tragic fall, featuring concert footage and television appearances (including excerpts from the band's set at Woodstock '94), interviews with the members of the group, behind-the-scenes glimpses at their recording sessions, and several of Blind Melon's concept videos. Songs featured include "No Rain," "Change," "Tones of Home," "Galaxie," and "St. Andrew's Hall."
Letters from a Porcupine is a 1996 documentary style film made up of footage from the musical career of the alternative rock band Blind Melon including music videos, interviews, live performances and home movie footage. Several pieces of footage were filmed by Shannon Hoon and his own video recorder which he was said to have brought everywhere. It also contains unreleased music by the band such as a song dubbed "no business". Letters from a Porcupine received a Grammy nomination in 1997 for Best Long Form Video.
This posthumous tribute to Blind Melon documents the band's ascendancy to the top of the charts, including extensive footage of live club performances, their set at Woodstock '94, late-night television appearances, and behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions for their final album. Songs include "Soup," "Toes Across the Floor," "St. Andrews Hall," "Soul One" and "No Rain (Ripped Away Version)."
