Robert Simpson was a distinguished musicologist who worked as a BBC music producer and broadcaster for many years and was himself a composer of 11 symphonies and many other works. He also championed other composers, from Beethoven to Havergal Brian, both of whom feature on a recent 'CRQ Editions' CD. As a brief sample, we hear Simpson introduce a 1968 broadcast of the 'Eroica' Symphony that closely mirrors the instrumental forces heard in Beethoven's own day. The complete work, along with Havergal Brian's 'Sinfonia Tragica', can be heard on 'CRQ Editions' CD 268 (see their website).
