Comparing flat wound vs. roundwound strings on my 5 string fretless Sire Marcus Miller V7. Recorded straight into Logic Pro X with slight compression, both the bridge and neck pickups turned up 50%. I used D'Addario strings in this video.
I personally prefer the roundwounds, so I'll be using them from now on. You will notice more "mwah" with rounds than with flats, especially when using the bridge pickup. Many people don't use roundwounds on fretless because they believe it will tear up the fingerboard; however, almost every well-known fretless bass player uses rounds and it doesn't damage the fingerboard beyond repair. If a little damage is done, the fingerboard can be refinished, and you have even less to worry about if the fingerboard is coated, like on my Sire here. I personally believe it's worth it to get that fretless tone.
