QUDEIH, QATIF PROVINCE, SAUDI ARABIA — A suicide bomber killed more than 20 people and wounded scores more after detonating an explosives belt at a Shiite mosque in Qatif province, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack. It is the second attack on Shiite worshipers since November, when gunmen killed at least eight people during a religious celebration.

According to officials, 150 people were gathered for morning prayers when the attack occurred. The bomber wore an explosives belt underneath his clothes.

Divisions between Sunni and Shiite Muslims are deepening in the region. Saudi Arabia is leading a predominantly Sunni coalition in attacks on Shiite rebels in Yemen. Saudi Arabia sees the rebels as agents of Shiite-led Iran.

Pictures of the attacker quickly spread on social media in the aftermath of the attack.
