I awoke that day filled with positive anticipation, ready to embark on a fly fishing adventure. The rainy cold weather didn't deter my enthusiasm; I was eager to relish the autumn beauty while pursuing Rainbow Trout.
After a leisurely morning routine that included savoring a cup of coffee, I prepared my truck and navigated the wet, rainy roads with care. I even took a brief detour down Sugar Camp National Forest Scenic Byway en route to Roaring River, allowing me to soak in the colorful fall foliage.
Upon reaching the check-in point, I secured my last fishing tag for 2023 as the season ends on October 31st. Just ten days later, on November 10, 2023, the Catch and Release season, which I fondly refer to as Winter Fishing, would commence.
To my delight, the park appeared nearly deserted, a rare sight considering that Roaring River State Park drew over 1.6 million visitors in 2022, making it the most visited state park in Missouri. This afforded me the opportunity to explore different, typically crowded parts of the park.
I harbored no grand expectations of landing the largest catch or amassing a trove of fish. For me, the essence of the experience surpassed any such considerations. Living in proximity to this enchanting place, which holds a special spot in my heart and the hearts of my family, is a blessing.
I wholeheartedly encourage you to join in the winter fishing at Roaring River. Perhaps you, too, will have the fortune of angling in solitude along this breathtaking stream.

Need to know regulations:
During November through February Catch-and-Release season the annual trout permit replaces the daily trout tag. No need to buy tag at the store - they will be closed.
November 10, 2023 - February 12, 2024
Trout fishing is allowed from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Fridays through Mondays.
Catch-and-release fishing only. (Fishing permit and annual trout permit required.)
Allowed lures: flies only

-Golden Stone Dry Fly (dropper setup) with egg pattern trailing.
-Single fly (egg pattern) peach or orange color with pinch foam indicator
