STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of Thai people participated in a candlelit ceremony in Bangkok on Monday night to celebrate the 84th birthday of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adyulyadej.
Young and old alike gathered in a park near the Grand Palace to mark the occasion and pray for good health to the ailing king.
Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra attended the ceremony, paying her respects to the world's longest-reigning monarch.
Earlier on Monday, in a rare public appearance, the revered king called for his countrymen to unite in the face of the worst floods in half a century.
More than a fifth of Thailand's 64 (m) million people have been affected by the ongoing flood crisis, which began in late July.
More than six hundred have died.
The king, who took the throne in 1946, was originally taken to hospital in September 2009 with a lung inflammation.
Official statements said he remained at the hospital for physical therapy and nourishment to recover his strength.
