Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday met with Henry Kissinger and other American representatives attending the fifth meeting of the China-US Track II high-level dialogue, saying that China will work closely with the US to adopt a new model of major power relationship to the mutual benefits of the peoples of both countries.
Xi said that he and the US President Barack Obama sincerely exchanged views on bilateral relations and international and regional situations of their common concern during his state visit to the US in September, and that they reached important consensus and their talks gained fruitful results.
The current development of China-US relations face both new opportunities and new challenges that require both countries to examine and handle from a strategic height, continued Xi, adding that the two countries should further enhance their mutual trust, actively expand their mutual cooperation and handle their disagreements properly.
Xi affirmed the significance of the Track II dialogue between China and the US and appreciated the efforts made by Henry Kissinger and other American representatives in promoting the Sino-US relations, encouraging them to continue to contribute to the development of the bilateral relations.
For his part, Kissinger first congratulated Xi on his successful state visit to the US and said that the Track II dialogue plays an important role in in-depth discussion concerning significant issues related to the two countries.
The former U.S. Secretary of State also said that China and the US should establish bilateral relations based on the spirit of cooperation and endeavor to strengthen their strategic dialogue, enhance mutual understanding and promote bilateral cooperation so as to curb negative factors in their bilateral relations.
Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi also attended the meeting.
