Walt Whitman was an American journalist, essayist and poet. Whitman made his way Washington to find his brother who had joined the Union army. He was profoundly affected by the large numbers of wounded soldiers and volunteered as a nurse in the army hospitals. He ministered to thousands of the sick and wounded, writing of this experience in "The Great Army of the Sick", published in a New York newspaper in 1863. He was a literary hero to many writers who followed him.
