On Sep 4, police in Nepal used water cannon and tear gas to disperse crowds at a religious festival that defied COVID-19 restrictions against public gatherings. Security forces tried to block festival-goers, and angry crowds pelted stones at the authorities and damaged police vehicles. Thousands had poured into the streets to celebrate a centuries-long tradition of pulling the chariot of the rain deity. The Himalayan nation has recorded more than 10,000 new infections and 100 deaths in the last 10 days.
