This is the beautiful song “Bella Ciao” (Goodbye Beautiful), which was a very important song from the Italian Resistance during July 1943 until May 1945.
Note that there is 2 versions of the song. In the video you see the lyrics of the song which was used during the 2nd world war. Below in the description you find the English lyrics of the Original version (from the 19th century, song by the paddy field workers who used the song to protest against the hard working conditions in the paddy fields in Northern Italy.
This month I am in the very beautiful Sicily in the south of Italy. Italy and especially Sicily played a crucial role during the 2nd World War. It was in Sicily where the first landings of Allied Forces took place (in July 1943; thus 11 months before the landings in Normandy France) which were the basis for the Armistice that Italy signed in September 1943 with the Allied Forces.
From September 1943, the Resistance movement in Italy grew strong and the Resistance fighters were called “Partizans” (Partigiani). The beautiful song “Bella Ciao” is about the fight of the “Partigiani” against the “Invadors”.
“Bella Ciao” (Goodbye Beautiful) is an italian folk song that was adopted as an anthem of the Italian Partizans (part of the Resistance Movement during 1943 and 1945) against Nazi Germany occupation of Italy and against the fascist Italian Social Republic. “Bella Ciao” is now used world wide as an hymn of freedom and resistance.
English translation of the Resistance version from the 2nd World war:
One morning I awakened,
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao! (Goodbye beautiful)
One morning I awakened
And I found the invader.
Oh partisan carry me away,
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
oh partisan carry me away
Because I feel death approaching.
And if I die as a partisan,
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
and if I die as a partisan
then you must bury me.
Bury me up in the mountain,
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
bury me up in the mountain
under the shade of a beautiful flower.
And all those who shall pass,
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
and all those who shall pass
will tell me "what a beautiful flower."
This is the flower of the partisan,
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
this is the flower of the partisan
who died for freedom
English version of the song sung by hard working farm labour in the 19th century:
In the morning I got up
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao (Goodbye beautiful)
In the morning I got up
To the paddy rice fields, I have to go.
And between insects and mosquitoes
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
and between insects and mosquitoes
a hard work I have to work.
The boss is standing with his cane
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
the boss is standing with his cane
and we work with our backs curved.
Oh my god, what a torment
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
oh my god, what a torment
as I call you every morning.
And every hour that we pass here
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
and every hour that we pass here
we lose our youth.
But the day will come when us all
oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao
but the day will come when us all
will work in freedom.
