In this video, you will learn about the different types of indents in Microsoft Word and how to use them to format your documents. Indents are spaces that move the text away from the page margins. There are three main types of indents: first line indent, hanging indent, and left indent.
- A **first line indent** inserts a space between the left margin and the first line of a paragraph. This is useful for creating a clear separation between paragraphs, such as in an essay or a novel. To create a first line indent, press the Tab key on your keyboard before typing the first sentence of a paragraph.
- A **hanging indent** inserts a space between the left margin and all the lines of a paragraph except the first one. This is useful for creating a list of references or citations, such as in a bibliography or a works cited page. To create a hanging indent, select the paragraph, right-click, and choose Paragraph. Then, under the Indents and Spacing tab, select Hanging from the Special drop-down menu and click OK.
- A **left indent** inserts a space between the left margin and all the lines of a paragraph. This is useful for creating a block quote or a sidebar, such as in a report or a magazine article. To create a left indent, select the paragraph, and drag the left indent marker on the ruler to the right.
