Nearly 870 million people around the world, or one in eight, are suffering from under-nutrition. Among them children are the most affected group. With people's access to food being adversely affected by their race, age, gender and locations of living, tackling food security and under-nutrition lies in the center of sustainable and equitable development.
The MDG-Fund supported 24 programs in areas where more than one-third of the world's under nourished people live. By using integrated approaches which combine cultural sensitivity and environmental adaptability, these programmes seek the balance between short-term urgent needs and long-term results and have strengthened 4 pillars of food security: increasing the availability and quality of food, improving people's access to it, promoting the use of good food as well as building resilience to environmental shocks and climate changes.
