THE CHAPAYEV – (SCRATCH) BUILDING THE TAMIYA GAZ-67B BUILD, PART 4, PIONEER TOOLS
ALL LINKS AT THE END OF THE DESCRIPTION!
Hi, guys! I learned a lesson while editing this video: Never, NEVER install a Windows update before you're finished with the video you're working on! I made that mistake and had to realize, that I couldn't use my microphones anymore after the installation! I had recorded 80% of the voice-over and for the remaining 20% I had to use my smartphone's voice recorder. Even with heavy editing it still sounds as if I was speaking into a tin bucket! I'm really sorry for this, but I didn't want to wait till somebody with better knowledge on the subject could offer some help, so I finished the video with the sound issues.
I said update #3 would be my last video before moving places, but I just can't stay away from the bench for too long. This was just a quick build and it made for a rather short video. The inbox review on the StuG III, Ausf. F, „last production“ is also in the making, but I want to find a solution for the microphone problem first.
For those who know the vehicle and this kit a question will pop up: „Pioneer tools? What pioneer tools?“ Correct! There aren't any pioneer tools in this kit and the Chapayev didn't come with any tools either, so WTF am I talking about???
I stumbled across a bunch of reference pics that show the GAZ with a shovel and a handsaw. Different shovels and saws were used and everything looked very improvised, just the way it would if a field work shop had added them to the car. That was the impression I was looking for and that I wanted to replicate.
You can buy a PE set by Voyager Models that includes handsaw and shovel. I've got pictures of a GAZ that show the exact same equipment and I guess it was the role model for the PE set. I don't know if that GAZ looked like that while being in service or if the civilian owner put them on for his needs or his taste. Quite frankly, I have no idea if any GAZ that was used in WW II was equipped with these tools, but I couldn't care less. They look good on the vehicle, add to the realism and make it more complete. These are perfect reasons to build the two items.
I didn't want to spend money on a PE set, because this project is meant to be an elaborate example of how to change the appearance of an aged kit by extra detailing it from scratch. The resin wheels are the exception, because they're just nice. All other items will be scratch built.
I'll show you how I built these tools and you'll see that it wasn't difficult to do. With some cheap materials at hand this was a matter of about four hours. Maybe you'd be faster with the PE set, but doing it with selfmade parts will make you pround and your GAZ unique. Individuality has become rare due to all the upgrade sets that are available.
Don't be afraid! You can do this and if you don't like your first result, do it again until you like it! That's something you couldn't do with a PE set. You've only got one shot. :)
