Photographer Devin Allen discusses growing up in Baltimore, photographing protests and the streets being his studio. He talks about Gordon Parks’s ability to draw you in with his images, and how his work, including American Gothic, shows his ability to connect with people.
Devin Allen is a self-taught artist born and raised in West Baltimore. He gained national attention when his photograph of the Baltimore Uprising was published on the cover of Time magazine in May 2015—only the third time the work of an amateur photographer had been featured. Following the deaths of George Floyd, Tony McDade, and Breonna Taylor, his photograph from a Black Trans Lives Matter protest was published on the cover of Time magazine in June 2020. He is winner of the 2017 Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award as a debut author for his book A Beautiful Ghetto (2017).
From the HBO / Kunhardt Film Foundation (KFF) Documentary "A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks" that follows Parks' career, from staff photographer for LIFE magazine through his artistic development and evolution as a novelist and filmmaker.
