Growing Billions of Tons of Sugarcane for Sugar Production - Inside the Sugar Processing Factory

Sugarcane is a tall, perennial grass used for sugar production. The plants grow 2-6 meters (6-20 feet) tall with stout, jointed stalks rich in sucrose, which accumulates in the stalk internodes. Sucrose, or table sugar, is extracted from sugarcane in specialized mills and is used in confectionery, beverages, jams, cakes, and as a raw material in the food industry.

Sugarcane processing produces sucrose, along with by-products like bagasse, molasses, and filtercake. Bagasse, the dry fiber left after juice extraction, is used as fuel, in paper production, agricultural mulch, and as a raw material for chemicals.

In 2020, global sugarcane production reached 1.87 billion tonnes, with Brazil producing 40%, India 20%, and China 6% of the total.
