STORYLINE:
Chinese, South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers gathered on Saturday for a series of meetings to discuss regional matters, particularly the planned upcoming North Korean rocket launch.
Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba, South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met each other in Ningbo, China, ahead of their annual trilateral talks on Sunday.
North Korea has said it plans to launch a rocket into space sometime between April 12 and April 16. North Korea says the rocket will carry a satellite into orbit to study crops and natural resources.
The launch is meant as a showcase of national power and technology during celebrations of one of the country's most important days - the centennial of the April 15 birth of national founder Kim Il Sung.
However, the United States, Japan, South Korea and others have condemned the launch, with US officials saying it is a cover to test missile systems that could target parts of the US.
Japan has readied extra land and sea defences to shoot down the rocket if it veers into the country's airspace.
Any launch would likely destroy a Feb. 29 accord between North Korea and the United States that would ship US food aid to the impoverished North in exchange for a moratorium on missile and nuclear tests, as well as a suspension of nuclear work at its main Yongbyon nuclear facility.
The US says plans to provide food to the North are already on hold.
North Korea has conducted three such launches since 1998.
The last launch, in 2009, led to United Nations condemnation and the North walking away from six-nation nuclear disarmament talks; weeks later, Pyongyang carried out its second nuclear test.
