Between her eye-catching music videos ("Vulnerable"), turn-up single with Schoolboy Q ("2 On") and Black Water mixtape, Tinashe is building a wave of anticipation for her as-yet-untitled upcoming debut album.
The Los Angeles native spoke to VIBE about her new album while she was in Austin, TX last month for her first-ever SXSW. She says it's a progression from her previous work, yet she's still pulling from her signature love stories. Exhibit A: Her A$AP Rocky-featured track "Pretend," which Tinashe says is one of her favorite records.
"'Pretend' is basically about when you're in a relationship and instead of dealing with the stuff that you deal with in a relationship, you don't want to do that," says the 21-year-old songbird. "You're just going to pretend that everything is fine. I think a lot of people can relate."
Tinashe's debut album drops later this year, featuring production from DJ Mustard, Mike WiLL Made It, Boi-1da, Dev Hynes and Ryan Hemsworth.
