In this video we will discuss about taking an oath by the Gita or any other sacred text before giving evidence in the court. The Courts used to keep various Holy Religious Books (Geeta, Quran or Bible) depending on the Religion of the eyewitness and the witness had to take an oath of his religious book and then proceed with the trial.
All this started happening during the Mughal period where it was believed that if Indian took oath on their holy book , they are less likely to lie on the stand. The same practice was adopted by Britishers by enacting the Indian Oaths Act, 1873.
28th Law Commission Report, amendment or revamp of Indian Oaths Act 1873 and enacting the Indian Oaths Act 1969.
Why an oath is taken by the Gita and not on the Ramayana.
