The 2006 Winter Olympics have taken place 50 years after Cortina d'Ampezzo have held the event in 1956. This time, Italy had staged their second Winter Games in Turin, from 10 to 26 February 2006. With its population of more than 900,000, Turin became the largest city ever to host the Winter Olympics.
For the first time, live video coverage of the Olympic Games was available on mobile phones. Including delayed programming, mobile operators provided video coverage in 18 countries on five continents. These Games saw sports fans relying more and more on the Internet for results and information, and to learn more about the Olympic Movement. The Turin Games' official website, Torino2006.org, have registered approximately 700 million page views, while the site of the IOC, Olympic.org, over 32 million.
The Turin Games have attracted 2,508 athletes representing 80 nations, an increase of two from the 78 represented at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. It sought the Winter Olympic debuts for Albania, Ethiopia and Madagascar, and was the only appearance so far for Serbia and Montenegro, coming between their change of name in 2003, and Montenegro's vote for independence later in May in the same year.
Produced by the Torino Olympic Broadcasting Organization, or TOBO, these were the first to be broadcast entirely in High Definition Television, using 400 HD cameras to cover the events, and delivering more than 900 hours of HD coverage to all rights holders worldwide. This theme music was used throughout the Games' international TV coverage, and was heard especially during the official titles and in the highlights reel.
