U.S. strikes Iran and Syria after deadly drone attack in Jordan
The massive barrage of strikes hit over 85 targets in seven locations, including command and control headquarters, intelligence centres, rockets and missiles, drone and ammunition storage sites, and other facilities associated with the militias or the IRGC's Quds Force, the Guard's expeditionary unit in charge of Tehran's relationship with and arming of regional militias. President Joe Biden also stated that there will be more to come.
The US strikes appeared to stop short of explicitly hitting Iran or senior officials of the Revolutionary Guard Quds Force within its borders, as the US seeks to keep the situation from developing further. Iran has denied being behind the Jordan strike.
The strikes' impact remained uncertain. Days of U.S. warnings may have caused militia members to flee into hiding. A knockout blow is improbable given that different factions are operating in various locations across several countries.
Though one of the largest Iran-backed militias, Kataib Hezbollah, stated it was ceasing attacks on American troops, others have promised to continue fighting, portraying themselves as champions of the Palestinian cause while the conflict in Gaza shows no indication of ending.
"Our answer started today. It will continue at times and locations of our choosing," Biden said, adding, "Let all those who may wish to harm us know that if you harm an American, we will retaliate." He and other top US leaders had been emphasising for days that any American retaliation would be "tiered" over time, rather than a single assault.
According to National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby, the targets were "carefully selected to avoid civilian fatalities and based on clear, irrefutable information that they were linked to attacks against US people in the vicinity." He refused to explain what the proof was.
Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, director of the Joint Staff, said the attacks lasted roughly 30 minutes and targeted three facilities in Iraq and four in Syria.
US blames a group of Iran-backed militants for a deadly drone attack in Jordan and considers retaliation.
What is Tower 22, the military base in Jordan that was assaulted and three US soldiers were killed?
The enemy drone that killed US servicemen in Jordan was mistaken for a US drone, according to preliminary reports.
According to US Central Command, the assault included more than 125 precision munitions launched by a variety of aircraft, including long-range B-1 bombers flown from the United States. Sims stated that weather had a role in the planning of the strikes, allowing the US to certify it was hitting the appropriate targets while sparing civilian casualties.
