This week's short practice idea is a diminished pattern favored by the grandmaster of the saxophone himself, John Coltrane. Watch the video and learn the pattern, then practice playing the shapes up, down, inside out, and in the three other diminished scales. Although you can definitely play this on diminished chords, you will get the most out of it by playing it on dominant chords as well. The pattern in the video is to be played on C7b9, Eb7b9, F#7b9 or A7b9 (or #9's). You can also play the pattern on C#, E, G and Bb diminished.
Happy practicing!
