Primoz Roglic blew the stage finale wide open with an attack, but fell in the last straight. Devastated and bleeding profusely, Roglic sat on the asphalt after the finish line. Can he continue tomorrow with his ambitions at the Vuelta?

Primoz Roglic had no intention of giving up in Spain without a fight. The Slovenian pulled out with a spirited attack, with which he would grab a few seconds of bonus at Evenepoel. But he crashed in a bizarre way in the last meters of the final sprint. Completely devastated - he awkwardly crossed the line.

Addy Engels, sports director at Jumbo-Visma, after the finish said "We didn't even see what happened ourselves. We watched on television, but we missed the crash. We just thought Roglic was in that first group and suddenly we hear about his fall. We have to wait and see how badly he is injured. Because it is clear that he is injured. He is now in the bus and trying to clean everything. Only then will we know something."

Roglic had suffered bruises and abrasions on his right elbow, hip and knee. Jumbo-Visma after consultation with their team doctor announced Roglic's abandonment.

"Unfortunately, Roglic will no longer be able to start in Stage 17 due to his crash yesterday," it said in a tweet.

His team encourages its leader: "Get better soon, champion. Thanks for all the great moments in this Vuelta. You still had ambitious plans for the last few days, but unfortunately it can't be."

Roglic has won the last 3 editions of the Vuelta a España. He won stage 4 in this year's race.
