Some Indonesians excavate the remains of their loved ones in an ancient ritual known as "Ma'nene," or the ceremony of cleaning corpses.
The four-day communal celebration in Tana Toraja, Indonesia, involves changing the dead's clothing and filling the coffins with personal belongings. And it isn't the only unique burial ritual involving Torajan people. In their culture, when someone dies, the mummified corpse often stays with the family for several months before burial. Then they are honored in a "Rambu Solo" ceremony and laid to rest.
"Ma'nene" can take place as often as the family wants, helping families — literally — stay in in touch with the dead.
